Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved African Americans were now free. This announcement came two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which had legally freed slaves in Confederate states but had not been enforced in areas without Union presence. Juneteenth, a blend of "June" and "nineteenth," has since evolved into a day to honor African American freedom and achievements, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. It became a federal holiday in 2021, symbolizing a significant moment in American history and serving as a reminder of the ongoing fight for racial justice and equality.
For the past two years, Southwest Community Watch has hosted a Juneteenth celebration for all to come to celebrate the significance of Juneteenth. This event has unified the community and people have a deeper understanding and appreciation of why Juneteenth is celebrated. We have numerous vendors, cornhole tournament, entertainment, activity and games for the children. This event is free to the public.
